Hospitality workers are often on the frontline when it comes to managing complex social behaviours in public settings. Many of the behaviours that present in these environments are quite culturally accepted as general d*ckhead behaviour or an unmitigable result of drunkenness. They are very commonly culturally accepted as more or less harmless.
When we think of preventing sexual violence and violence against women and gender diverse people broadly, we often imagine looking out for a scary looking perpetrator jumping out from behind bushes when the unfortunate reality is that perpetrators of violence are most often just everyday customers and people in our community. This is the monster myth. Statistically, perpetrators of violence are most often male (accounting for roughly 95% of all perpetrators of violence) and they are our neighbours, colleagues, customers, friends and even sadly sometimes our family members.
Research tells us that while not all customers who offend and bother others will go on to perpetrate sexual or physical violence, that harmful attitudes, stereotyping and more subtle inappropriate behaviours are always present when violence does occur. Therefore learning to recognise and respond to lower level violent behaviours is essential to preventing violence and creating a safe space for staff and patrons alike.
This workshop has been specifically designed with hospitality staff and business owners in mind. Learn about the prevalence and causes of sexual violence and violence against women and gender diverse people. Learn how to recognise harmful warning behaviours in your venue and how staff can safely intervene. Learn how to deter problem makers from your venue, reduce the incidence of low-level violence and escalation and reduce the need for bystander intervention.
This workshop is culturally and LGBTIQA+ inclusive, practical and interactive. Brainstorm with your team helpful strategies and solutions to violence prevention that will suit your needs. This workshop is the perfect accompaniment to the Ask for Angela initiative, and the most comprehensive, practical and solution-focused bystander intervention training available in Adelaide. Workshops run for 3 hours. Early and after hours delivery is available to suit your staff needs at an affordable price for up to 50 participants at a time.
